The Society is a fraternal organization comprised of approximately 8,000 members (men and women) who served with honor in the defense of America as Special Agents in the FBI. Each of our members had pledged fidelity, bravery, and integrity in the conduct of investigations on behalf of the people of the United States. In the spirit of that oath, we continue to support the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The vision for a Society was sparked in February 1937 at the Lincoln Hotel in New York City. A small group of former FBI Agents met to discuss the preservation of the friendships formed during Bureau service. In July 1937, the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI was founded. Since that time, the Society has fulfilled a social function for its members and has focused on two primary objectives: preserving the FBI heritage in a spirit of friendship, loyalty and goodwill, and aiding and supporting the FBI. (The previous two paragraphs concerning the Society's history have been borrowed from the national web site.)
